MTG precons explained: every Commander precon, how to pick one, where to buy

Commander preconstructed decks (MTG precons) are the easiest way into EDH. Here’s every recent set, what each deck does, and how to choose your first one.

If you've been Magic-curious but bouncing off the cost of building a deck from scratch, precons are the move. A "precon" — short for preconstructed deck — is a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck Wizards ships several times a year, costing roughly $40-50 retail. You open the box, shuffle, sit down at a table, and play.

Why precons matter

Commander is the most-played MTG format. A custom Commander deck takes 50+ hours of brewing and $200+ in singles. A precon takes zero brewing and $40. The decks are intentionally balanced against each other, so four precon players at one table is a great game.

Precons also pay you back: most include a few $5-$20 reprints that recover a chunk of the box price the moment you open it.

Recent precon waves

2026 releases

Lorwyn: Eclipsed Commander (Jan 2026, 2 decks) returned to the Lorwyn plane with new tribal staples. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Commander (Mar 2026, 1 deck) was a one-off Universes Beyond drop. Secrets of Strixhaven Commander (Apr 2026, 5 decks) ships one deck per Strixhaven school — the broadest precon wave in years.

2025 — the Final Fantasy year

2025 shipped a record 13 precons across several sets: Aetherdrift (Feb, 2 decks), Tarkir: Dragonstorm (Apr, 5 decks), Final Fantasy Commander (Jun, 4 decks), and Edge of Eternities (Aug, 2 decks).

The four Final Fantasy decks were the breakout of the year — the IP collaboration sold out almost everywhere, with secondary-market pricing well above MSRP for months. The standout, Limit Break, is the red-green-white Final Fantasy VII deck featuring Cloud as commander. It plays an Equipment-and-attack game plan: Cloud auto-attaches Equipment when he enters and draws a card for each equipped attacking creature, so combat snowballs fast. Alternate commander Tifa, Martial Artist rewards power-7+ creatures.

If you can still find Limit Break at MSRP, it's the best $40-50 entry point into Commander right now — combat is the most readable strategy for new players.

2024 — Murders at Karlov Manor and Duskmourn

Murders at Karlov Manor (Feb 2024, 4 decks) shipped a detective-themed lineup. Duskmourn: House of Horror (Sep 2024, 4 decks) leaned into horror tropes. Both are widely available on the secondary market for under MSRP now.

Universes Beyond — Doctor Who, LOTR, Warhammer 40K

The LOTR Commander decks (2023, 4 decks) have aged well and are still available. Doctor Who Commander (Oct 2023, 4 decks) is popular with newer players. Warhammer 40K (2022, 4 decks) is harder to find at MSRP — it was a small print run.

How to pick your first precon

  1. What strategy sounds fun? Most precons telegraph their game plan in the deck name. "Aggression" precons want combat; "Spellcasting" precons want to cast lots of instants and sorceries.
  2. How complex is it? Each precon lists a complexity rating on the box (1/4 simple → 4/4 complex). New players: stick to 2/4 or below.
  3. Will you upgrade it? If you're going to add cards later, pick a strategy with affordable upgrade paths. Token decks, aristocrats, and lifegain all have huge $5-card pools.

Where to buy precons at MSRP

Bigbox stores (Target, Walmart) carry precons at MSRP but stock is wildly inconsistent. Your best bet is a local game store — many WPN-affiliated shops pre-order extra copies for regulars.

Use our MTG shop directory to find a Magic-stocking shop near you. Filter for "Sealed product" or "FNM" to find shops where you can actually play the precon after buying it.

What to do after you buy

  • Play it as-is for 3-5 games. Don't immediately upgrade. The deck was tested as a unit.
  • Identify the weak cards. After 5 games, you'll know which 10-15 cards consistently underperform. Those are your upgrade slots.
  • Sleeve it. Even a $40 precon represents 100 cards you handle weekly. Get sleeves and a deck box.
Rule of thumb: A precon is a complete deck. Build one custom deck for every three precons you own — they last longer, get more table time, and you'll have stronger opinions before you commit to a custom build.

Frequently asked questions

What is an MTG precon?
A precon (preconstructed deck) is a ready-to-play Commander deck Wizards releases with most Magic sets. Each contains 100 cards, costs $40-50 MSRP, and is designed to be balanced against other precons from the same wave.
Are MTG precons worth it?
For new Commander players, yes — they’re the cheapest path to a complete deck. For experienced players, they’re a good source of reprints (most precons include $20-30 worth of reprints) and as starting points for upgraded builds.
How many cards are in an MTG precon?
100 cards. Standard Commander deck size: 1 commander + 99 supporting cards including basic and non-basic lands.
Where can I buy MTG Commander precons at MSRP?
Local game stores are the most reliable — many pre-order extra copies for regulars at MSRP. Big-box retailers (Target, Walmart) sometimes carry them at MSRP but stock is inconsistent. Avoid scalpers and "guaranteed sealed" listings 2-3x MSRP.
